Girl Scout Week Starts Sunday March 9th!

Girl Scout Week: March 9-15, 2014

Girl Scout Birthday

On March 12, 1912, the first Girl Scout meeting was held in Savannah, Georgia. Girl Scouts of all ages celebrate this day year-round by demonstrating leadership and commitment in ways that have a real impact in their communities. We encourage Girl Scouts to celebrate that date, our birth date with something special. There are many ways to celebrate the Girl Scout birthday!

  1. Complete a service project – Get out in your community and find a way to help others.
  2. Throw a birthday party for Girl Scouts.
  3. Learn something about Juliette Gordon Low and the founding of Girl Scouts. Information is available in The Girls Guide to Girl Scouting for each grade level.
  4. Check out the Birthday Week Activity Sheet– it’s full of ideas to do every day of Girl Scout Week.

Girl Scouts has a birthday, why is there a need for a whole week? Well, there is more to Girl Scout Week than the Girl Scout birthday. Girl Scout Week includes three significant days:

  • Girl Scout Sunday, March 9, 2014
  • March 12 is the 102nd birthday of the first Girl Scout meeting in Savannah, Georgia
  • Girl Scout Sabbath, March 15, 2014

Girl Scout Sunday and Girl Scout Sabbath

Some religions observe Girl Scout Sunday on the Sunday beginning Girl Scout Week, while other religions observe the Girl Scout Sabbath on the Friday or Saturday ending Girl Scout Week. This arrangement allows our membership of diverse faiths to celebrate on their chosen day of worship.

These special days give Girl Scouts an opportunity to attend their place of worship and be recognized as a Girl Scout. If a place of worship is the group sponsor, girls may perform a service, such as greeting, ushering or doing a flag ceremony. These days can also be a time when girls explore other faiths and earn their My Promise My Faith Award.

Ladies, with it being the Girl Scout Birthday, I would like to extend our meeting on Thursday if that is okay with you guys! I would like to concentrate on the Girl Scout Birthday and have a little party for everyone. Michelle right now is in charge of snacks that night, but if there would be any others that would like to pitch in for snacks, food, ect, that way the girls would feel like its a party, that would be great! Please respond to this email and let me know what you guys would like to bring, that would be great!

I also emailed out a Birthday Week Activity Calendar. Please bring this with you to the meeting on Thursday! If your Girl Scout has completed at least 5 things on this list, they will be eligible for the Girl Scout Week patch (which is currently on backorder but will be getting them!)

Please let me know if you need anything or have any questions!

Cookie Walkabout February 22nd

The councils official date of the Girl Scout Cookie Walkabout is February 22nd, which is this Sunday! Our troop will be hosting our Cookie Walkabout from 2pm-4pm. We chose this time as there is a cookie booth that morning and we want to make sure everyone can attend.
The requirements for the walkabout are as follows:
The Cookie Walkabout is designed to promote door-to-door sales.
To qualify to earn a FREE cookie walkabout patch, girls can participate in a chaperoned neighborhood door-to-door sale that lasts for at least two hours. Any girl and/or troop can participate.Inline image 1
Michelle will let you know when you can pick up the cookies on Saturday, or you can meet us at our cookie booth on Sunday to pick up cookies. You NEED your cookies to participate.
We will be meeting at the Lynnhaven Parkway McDonalds at 4:15pm to celebrate with some ice cream!!! (I know originally we were going to do food, but since its later in the day, and I don’t know if every parents wants their kids to have that for dinner, ect. So it will just be ice cream and celebration!) That is where all the participants will get their walk about patch for a job well done, and there may or may not be some Top Seller prizes!!
Please let myself AND Michelle know if you will be participating, so she can arrange your pick up of cookies with her!
 Thanks again!! Vanessa

Good morning all!!!
First and foremost, can I just say how amazing you guys are?! Seriously! I want to thank you guys for the support, being flexible, and above all, staying committed to our troop!
I want to thank Michelle for holding down the fort, as I was stuck in Georgia because of all the delayed flights. I didn’t get home till Friday night, and man was that trip horrible!
So we have A LOT of things coming at us, starting this week, first and foremost: COOKIE BOOTHS! I know that Michelle has been keeping you informed on all the updates! For those that have signed up for cookie booths, THANK YOU! I checked this morning, and there are still a few slots available for cookie booths! Please sign up of you are available!
Also, please know that meetings are still every other Thursday at Kempsville Rec Center! Unless I haven’t sent an email stating that the meeting is canceled, we will still have meetings (even if I am not conducting them).
As the weather gets  nicer (hopefully) we will be seeing more and more field trips planned. For example, by Wednesday, I will hopefully have a tour set up at the fire station and that will be our meeting for next Thursday! Keep that in mind and I will update you guys on Wednesday!
I will be sending emails about events that will be available to our troop. Some of them I would like us all to attend, as they are going to be towards petals, and others are at your convenience.
I have received a few emails concerning communication. I know that we are all busy with work, life, kiddos, ect. To make sure that you guys are getting this information, please if you can shoot a quick email back saying “Thanks got it” or something quick along those lines, that way I know all the information is being presented to you all, that would be greatly appreciated!!
Again, thank you all!!
Vanessa 🙂

Recap of our First Meeting December 5th 2013

Good morning all!!

I hope that you guys are doing well! With all the last minute changes, I think that our first meeting was a great success!!!!

First and foremost, I want to say THANK YOU AGAIN for all the supplies, it truly means a lot! I must say that you guys will be the ones that makes this year a success, and I can’t wait to watch us grow!!

So our first meeting was pretty simple! Getting to know all the girls, explaining the importance of the Girl Scout Law and Promise, and really just getting a feel for the troop! I must say, we have some animated girls in our group!! They were just too cute and funny! I think the very best part for me was at the end, when they all came up to me and gave me a hug, that was probably the most humbling experience ever! I know we can all agree as parents, we probably don’t realize the impact we have on our own children because we see them everyday. But being able to impact other children, there is definitely a great feeling that is involved! I know I left the meeting smiling!

I know that we are having some location issues, and I am working diligently on those. I know its safe to say that the entire troop would prefer where we ended up meeting at, so I will do my best to push for that for you guys. I will get you all a final answer by this week!

Don’t forget, our Investiture Ceremony will be December 19th! Please bring cameras to take photos of them becoming official Girl Scouts! Also, please make sure all the girls have their tunics on! If you have already pinned them with the Daisy Pin, please have that removed for the meeting, as it will be “officially” pinned by us! There will be cupcakes to celebrate afterwards!

If you have not paid your dues yet, please get those paid by the next meeting!

Also, tomorrow. December 10th, 2013, is our Cookie Training at Kempsville High School! This training will be at 6:30pm in the Cafeteria!

If you have any pictures from the meeting, please email them to me at, so I can have them for our Troop Scrapbook!!

Have a great day!
